Use formulas for target goals

Prev Next

Build a target's goal with the formula editor instead of typing a single fixed number. Combine math operators, metrics, and other targets to calculate a goal that references real data and updates as that data changes.

Before you begin

  • Open the target details editor.

  • Select the node or nodes you want to configure in the tree on the left side of the target screen.

Build a formula manually

Type a formula directly into the Goal equation field to combine numbers with standard math operators.

  1. Click into the formula field in the Goal section.

  2. Type a number to add it to the formula. Numbers you type in automatically format with commas for place value.

  3. Use math operators to build out the calculation: type + to add, - to subtract, * to multiply, or / to divide.

  4. Use parentheses to group parts of the formula and control the order of operations, for example (5 * 200) + 50.

Add a metric to a formula

Reference a metric instead of typing a static number so the goal recalculates from real performance data — historical data such as trailing bookings, or forward-looking data such as upcoming renewal value.

The metrics available depend on where you're setting the target. A territory-level target shows territory, product, and segment metrics. A team-level target shows team and product metrics.

  1. From the entity panel on the left side of the Goal section, search or browse for the metric you want.

  2. Drag the metric into the formula field.

  3. Select the node you want the metric to pull data from.

  4. For a time series target, select the time period for the metric, such as a fiscal year or a trailing period like the last three years.

  5. Optional: Add math operators around the metric to adjust the result. For example, divide by three to get a yearly average, then multiply by 1.2 to apply 20 percent growth.

Reference another target in a formula

Build a target's goal off the value of another target instead of a metric. Use this when one target should scale automatically with another, such as an SE overlay target that's a percentage of an AE quota.

  1. From the entity panel, find the target you want to reference under Product Targets, Team Targets, or Territory Targets.

  2. Drag the target into the equation field.

  3. Add any math operators you need, such as multiplying by a percentage to calculate an overlay.

Note

If you're pulling a territory target into a team target specifically to consolidate it into an individual's quota, refer to Create territory-based targets in teams for that dedicated workflow.
