# Use metrics

Metrics serve as a quantifiable measure to monitor and evaluate the performance of specific business areas, playing a crucial role in the planning process by enabling the creation of measurable, fair, and achievable sales plans.

## Before you begin

## Manage metrics on the summary panel

### Add metrics to the summary panel

In the main tab of each plan, there is a panel that you can display up to 5 metrics in (in a territory module, this is in the **Accounts** tab, team module is the **Employees** tab, and products module is the **Products** tab).

1. From the [summary metrics panel](/plan-and-pay/docs/metrics#summary-metrics-panel), click **Add Metric**.

2. From the **Metric**dropdown, select the metric you want to display.
3. Optional. From the **Time Period**dropdown, select the time period you want to display for the metric (only available for timeseries and time period metric types).

4. Click **Confirm**.

### Remove metrics from the summary panel

1. From the **Summary Panel**, find the metric you want to remove.
2. Click the **menu ⋮ > Remove**.

### Filter the data on the metric

You can customize the data you want to display for the metric.

> 
> These filters are only available for timeseries metrics and not scalar.

1. From the **Summary Panel**, find the metric you want filter.
2. Optional. Click the **time period**dropdown and select the time period you want to view the metric for.

| Filter | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **Fiscal Year** | Selected fiscal year. |
| **Trailing** | Past number of days selected to the current date. |
| **To Date** | Start of the last month, quarter, or year to the current date. |
| **This** | Current month, quarter, or year. |
| **Last** | Last month, quarter, or year. |
| **Next** | Next month, quarter, or year (estimated). |
| **Custom** | Select the date range to filter data on. |
3. Optional. Click the **menu ⋮**, select from the available filter options:

| Filter | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **Group By** | Groups the data by the selected time range. Select to group the data by: - **Month**(default) - **Quarter** - **Half Year** - **Year** |
| **Show Rate of Change** | Displays the rate of change over the selected time period. Select to display the rate of change for: - **Over Last Year** - **Over Same Year Last Period** - **None** (default) |
| **Show Target Attainment** | Displays the target attainment data for that metric. Select to display a target attainment, if available. |

## Pin metrics to a dashboard

When you pin a metric to a dashboard, it creates a snapshot of the metric with the filters you have selected.

> Note
> 
> You cannot change the metrics parameters from the dashboard, if you want a different view of the metric, you must change it on the summary panel and then pin it with your selected filters.

1. From the **Summary Panel**, find the metric you want to pin.
2. Optional. [Filter the data](/plan-and-pay/docs/summary-metrics#filter-the-data-on-the-metric) so the metric displays the exact data you want to view in the dashboard.

4. From the **Decision Center**dropdown, select the dashboard you want to pin the metric to.
5. Click **Confirm**.

### View pinned metrics

1. Go to **Reports.**
2. Find the dashboard you selected to view your pinned metric.
