# Filter for active and current assignments

When you clone or mass update assignments if a single user has more than one assignment to the same role at the same node—inactive (past) or future assignments as well as a current (active) one—the update may error out. Add criteria to filter out inactive and future assignments to update relevant active assignments and prevent this error.

1. [Clone](/v1/docs/clone-assignments) or [mass update](/v1/docs/mass-update-assignments) coverage assignments.
2. In the **Criteria**section, click **Add Condition** twice:

  1. Filter out inactive (past) assignments: Select `Assignments.End Date` `is greater than` `MM/DD/YYY` (current date)
  2. Filter out future assignments: Select `Assignments.Start Date` `is less than` `MM/DD/YYY` (future date)
