# Define territory segments

Set up map-based territory criteria to define segments.

1. [Create a geographic hierarchy](/v1/docs/create-a-geographic-hierarchy).
2. In the **Manage segments** window, select one of the following to define your territory segments:
  1. [Bucket](/v1/docs/use-buckets-to-define-territory-segments)
  2. [Smart Map](/v1/docs/use-smart-map-to-define-territory-segments)
  3. [Template](/v1/docs/use-a-template-to-define-territory-segments)
3. Configure the segmentation type.
4. Click **Confirm**.
5. [Manually add or remove geographic areas](/v1/docs/assign-geographic-areas-to-territories) to customize the territories.
