# Get started with routing

Create and implement routing policy in Fullcast. This applies to lead routing, account routing, opportunity routing, case routing, and contact routing. Routing uses territory rules and coverage assignments to evaluate record data. It can then update record ownership in Salesforce, and dynamically adjust routing based on the most current territory and coverage configuration.

## Before you begin

- Basic [understanding of Fullcast routing](/plan-and-pay/docs/assignments).
- A [configured territory plan](/plan-and-pay/docs/territory-carving-reference-guide) in Fullcast.
- Existing [territory coverage assignments](/plan-and-pay/docs/coverage-assignments).
- Basic understanding of Salesforce [flows](https://www.salesforceben.com/introduction-salesforce-flow/) and [custom metadata](https://www.salesforceben.com/custom-metadata-types/).

## Implement territory-based routing

1. **Plan your routing****policies**

Plan before you configure routing policies in Fullcast to ensure accuracy and simplify the process. Use the [plan your routing policies](/plan-and-pay/docs/plan-your-routing-policies) worksheet to plan individual routing scenarios.
2. **Review your territory plan and coverage**

Before you set up territory-based routing, [review your existing territory rules and coverage](/plan-and-pay/docs/review-territory-rules-and-coverage-for-routing-preparation). You will use this information to configure the custom metadata in Salesforce, which is critical to accurately execute the routing policy.
3. **Configure your routing policy in Fullcast**

A routing policy in Fullcast consists of [three components](/plan-and-pay/docs/routing-policy-stages#routing-policy-components). To build your routing policy, [configure the routing policy stages](/plan-and-pay/docs/routing-policy-stages#routing-policy-stages) that are applicable for the type of record you are routing.
4. **Define policy****tags**

If your routing rules will vary according to values on the record (for example, leads created through event lists route differently than those created through a demo request form), you will likely need to define [policy tags](/plan-and-pay/docs/create-policy-tags). For simpler routing policies, you may need only to define a fixed string to serve as the policy tag.
5. **Configure****custom metadata****in Salesforce**

There are several features of Fullcast routing that require [configuration of custom metadata in Salesforce](/plan-and-pay/docs/configure-salesforce-custom-metadata-for-fullcast-routing). This includes enabling the [clean domain](/plan-and-pay/docs/clean-domain-functionality-1) process, defining rules for best match account, and general field mapping for territory-based routing.
6. **Add Fullcast policy status and error logs in Salesforce**

Fullcast policy status provides details about how policies execute and policy error logs can help with troubleshooting. [Set up Fullcast policy status and error logs](/plan-and-pay/docs/object-manager-setup-for-policy-status-and-policy-error-logs) to your views or page layouts.
7. **Configure a Salesforce flow to trigger your Fullcast Routing Policy**

Fullcast routing policies require a Salesforce flow to trigger them. [Configure Salesforce flows for Fullcast routing policies](/plan-and-pay/docs/configure-salesforce-flows-for-fullcast-routing-policies) to create a flow that works for your unique Salesforce environment.
8. **Test, monitor, and troubleshoot your Fullcast routing policy**

Before you deploy, it is critical to [test your routing policy](/plan-and-pay/docs/test-fullcast-routing-policies) in a sandbox (pre-production) environment. Review [policy status records](/plan-and-pay/docs/understand-the-policy-status-page-in-salesforce) and potential [troubleshooting](/plan-and-pay/docs/troubleshooting-routing-issues) when you encounter unexpected outcomes.
